As the title of this page states:  These photos show the making

of a very special Ferrari model which I was commissioned to

build.

These photos are really only the "tip of the iceberg" so to

speak since I have been extensively documenting all stages of

the build process.  The photos will just give you a basic idea of

what goes into the making of a scratch built model (as well as

any of our CMA Models 1:12th scale master patterns before

they go into their very limited production runs).

The roughed out basic body shape which still needs some fine

tuning before hollowing out the inside, etc.

(Photo 1)

The final exterior shaping of the body shell now complete.

Photo shows the body hollowed out with side vents cut out,

head light areas cut in and panel lines drawn on before

engraving them for later cutting open.

(Photo 2)

Rear view of body shell with panel lines now engraved and

wire wheels in approximate positions.

(Photo 3)

The body shell showing off all its opening panels.  Each panel

will have working hinges made to represent the actual hinges

on the real car.  All of these panels are being set and shaped

for tight tolerances and correct underside detailing right down

to the uneven rivet detail on some of their edges that fit inside

the channels around the openings.

(Photo 4)

In progress shows test fitting of completed engine, grill, interior

panels, and more.

Completed engine which is made up of well over 500 parts!

(Photos 8 - 9)

Three wing nuts for the airbox.

(Photo 10)

Final clear resin castings of the lenses for head lights, fog

lights and signal lights. Each is fully and correctly engraved.

(Photo 11)

Early stages of fabricating the seat master.

(Photo 12)

This photo shows machined brass tire blanks. Multi stage

process of making front & rear tires. First measurements,

drawings, photos are done.  Specs are then sent to machinist

for brass "blanks."

(Photo 13)

This photo shows the brass tire blanks with tread pattern

engraved. Drawings & specs along with brass blanks are sent

to laser engraver for exact laser engraved tread pattern on

surfaces.

(Photo 14)

Drawings & specs go to graphic artist for photo etch artwork to

make photo etched side wall lettering & numbers in various

sizes & thickness. This photo shows the setup for attaching all

the characters to the side walls.

(Photo 15)

Cloesup of some of the photo etched characters before

attaching to tire masters.  Each character gets shaped to fit to

the rounded contour of the tire side walls!

(Photo 16)

Final tire masters with all lettering attached and then a sealer

coat of primer.

(Photo 17)

Final soft polyurethane tires.   The wire wheels still need to be

painted silver.

(Photo 18)

Wheel spinner brass masters which have been laser

engraved. Next step is making molds and castings, then they

will be chrome plated.
